Activities
The mountains of Western North Carolina offer an
almost unlimited amount of things to do, especially
for those interested in the outdoors. The area
offers an unspoiled beauty that is hard to find
these days. The high elevation means a gentle
climate. The hottest summer days are refreshed by
cool breezes, and though the area does get snow
during the winter the temperatures are not too cold
to get out and enjoy the winter wonderland that
Allegheny County becomes after a snowfall.
If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, there are
hundreds of miles of hiking trails nearby. Stone
Mountain State park is close by, as is New River
State Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are a
number of private campgrounds in the area that offer
camping, as well as Doughton Park. The New and
Little Rivers offer an opportunity for visitors to
float down the water in a canoe, kayak, raft, or
tube. There are a number of outfitters in the area
that will rent these out, and many offer guided
trips down the rivers. Our rivers and streams are
